Fascial Stretch Therapy is a great way to improve flexibility and mobility, increase performance, and improve recovery. If you are heavily involved in strength training, mobile muscles are the other side of the sword that is needed for improved performance. If you are constantly tightening up your muscles and they become stiff, your ability to stretch then contract the muscle is limited. Many muscles stay tight and in a contracted position even while at rest. When this occurs, it limits blood supply to the tissue, which decreases recovery time.

Adding FST to your training program will help your performance greatly. Many misconceptions are that stretching is painful, but FST sessions are not painful at all. Our therapist will work with your body to gradually increase range of motion without overdoing the stretch.

Our therapist, Jessica Van Asselberg is a life long athlete. She is a world record holder in powerlifting and knows what an athlete needs. Her clientele consists of athletes, everyday people, and elderly clients looking to move better and feel better.

Jessica does 30minute, 60 minute, and 90 minute sessions. For more information visit our FST page. To schedule an appointment please call the front desk at (520) 445-6800.

Mobility Training is one of the biggest reasons people come into our gym for help. Without mobility, there is no Strength. Mobility refers to the ability to actively take a joint through a range of motion. Flexibility is how far you can passively take a joint through a range of motion. if you lie on your back and have someone grab your foot and bring your leg up strait till it can’t go up any further is your Flexibility range of motion. They are passively moving your joint through a range of motion. Now having you, from that same position actively raise your let up as high as it can go is an example of mobility. Though both are important, mobility is a combination of flexibility and strength.

The series in the video above is a good full body series that offers some dynamic movement that will help warm you up to train and it is also a good everyday practice for overall fitness.

I have received some feedback and a small handful people are not happy, but most are happy we are no longer requiring it.

The biggest reason we went mask optional is that my highest risk population of 60 and above are vaccinated. Many of my younger clientele that have wanted to get vaccinated are also vaccinated. We have a 13,000sqft facility and are never near capacity. The only documented incidents from gyms spreading the virus were in small studio settings where people were partaking in HIIT/Spin classes training closely together, and that does not apply to our gym.

We are still holding our higher intensity classes outside for the time being since people tend to breathe heavier in those situations.

Though you can exercise while wearing a mask, it isn’t optimal. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. The WHO still suggests to NOT wear a mask while exercising. The CDC up until a few weeks ago did not suggest it. They recently just changed that but with no data to back it.

Many people wearing masks in the gym are buying “highly breathable” sports masks which completely defeat the purpose of wearing a mask if it is letting air in and out freely (which is important for exercise). If air is moving easily through a mask it isn’t protecting anyone except to make people feel safer. There are nearly no peer reviewed studies of people wearing a t-shirt on their face that proves it stopped the spread of the virus. It’s not like we were all wearing N95s.

When the Gov said we had to enforce masks in the gym I followed suit. I did not stand on that hill to die and resist the mask mandate for gyms even though I know many other small locally owned gyms didn’t enforce it. I didn’t want to put my business in jeopardy and there was no vaccine available and my clients appreciated it.

Fast forward to today. It’s a different situation. I am not going to stand on the hill of forcing people to wear masks while they are exercising when I don’t have to. The fitness industry in general has moved to mask optional and I have chosen to follow suit. Nearly all membership driven gyms in the state have gone mask optional.

Just as I did not tolerate anti-maskers giving us a hard time when we were enforcing the mandates, I will not tolerate pro-maskers getting in our face about not enforcing it.

If you are not wearing a mask and you see a group of people in the gym wearing masks, don’t be an asshole and get up close to them. Give people distance. I will not tolerate any type of negativity one way or the other. People are free to chat with me about this, but I will not argue or get into a heated debate. If you find yourself having “strong” feelings on this cool down before opening a discussion.

I also had a direct phone conversation yesterday with Juan Ciscomani, Governor Doug Ducey’s Senior Advisor. He reassured me the County and City Mask mandates are unenforceable.

As we approach and surpass our 40s we can still push our body’s to amazing levels of strength and fitness if we choose to do so. I have personally worked with people in their 60s that went from sedentary to fit and extremely strong humans. The important piece to consider is how we structure our training as well as our mindset. Understanding that our muscles, tendons, and ligaments are not the same as they were is important. Being patient with ourselves and setting up a process for success is crucial.

A huge mistake I consistently see is people finding the motivation to train and become healthy, only to get discouraged with injury or a relapse in lack of motivation. All of these scenarios are usually due to not having a plan except to just workout. Many do what they “used to do” or they jump into a program that is completely inappropriate for them at that time. If you haven’t trained in years and you start your old lifting routine from your 20s you will most likely not last long. Same goes for people that decide to jump into a hard core group training program that some movie star is doing. It feels great until it doesn’t.

Training should add to your life, not deplete it. We have changed in how we move and ramping up our training to build mobility, strength, and conditioning is crucial. Think incremental gains over a period of time. Not ass kicking results in only a few weeks. The more intense and the more aggressive you start, the easier it is to quit and fizzle. Five consistent training session per week at a moderate intensity, trumps 3 ass kickers that leave you overly tired or slightly injured.

Here are a couple videos where I break down a few concepts.

Me: “Tell me about your goals?”

Potential Client: “I really want to lose some weight.”

Me: “So tell me about your nutrition?”

Potential Client: “I eat really clean, organic whole foods, I just need to start training more because I am gaining weight.”

I can’t count the times this scenario plays out during a consultation. Just recently I met with potential client that had a ton of nutrition questions. He said he ate clean about 5 times in 10 minutes. I also heard the words organic, complex, and whole foods numerous times. As we talked about nutrition, he became confused and slightly distraught when I told him he had to eat less to lose the weight. I told him I thought it was great he is eating high quality foods, that wasn’t going to help him see the scale go down. As I broke down calories for him and gave him some goals to hit around the numbers of grams of fats and carbs to eat he said “but I can eat avocados because they are healthy fats, right?” Without a pause I said, I don’t care how healthy, clean, or organic your fats are they are still calories. He visually looked upset and put off. The truth hurts sometimes and we have been inundated by so much information on the internet that our truth is skewed. There is an thought process that eating quality foods will some how translate to weight loss. I wasn’t telling him to eat junk food, just that fats from avocados, almonds, and olive oil are just…calories just like calories from butter and steak.

Yes, eating avocados is better than eating lard out of a can for our cardiovascular health, but if we want the scale to drop, we have to acknowledge that fat still provides 9 calories per gram regardless of the form it comes in. Whether its clean, dirty, or whatever adjective you want to attach to it, the caloric load is the same. The same goes for good carbs vs bad carbs, clean vs junk, organic vs processed. These adjectives we like to attach to foods may make a difference in overall health, but if we want the scale to go down we must look at calories.

There seems to be some sort of comfort to ones self that they are eating organic homemade avocado dressing over a store bought bottle of ranch dressing. Whether you cook your food in avocado oil or butter, the amount of fat you cook it in matters when you want to lose weight.Period. Whether you are eating Fruity Pebbles or Yams, 1 gram of carbs equals 4 calories. This doesn’t mean eat garbage food, but it does mean that calories must be looked at to lose weight. When weight loss is the focus, portion control is more important that quality control.

How Much Should You Eat to Lose Weight?

As for the amount of calories you should be eating for weight loss that is an entirely different topic, but for most people eating just slightly above your basal metabolic rate is the best place to start. Here is a link to a free online BMR Calculator. There is a lot of variability to this, but in general if your BMR is 1800 calories and you are not very active, it is probably what you should be shooting for. Even if you are moderately active and training a few days per week, you don’t need to fuel up much past your BMR if weight loss is the goal. I will have to write a completely different article on this topic, but quantifying food intake is something everyone should have some experience with and offers valuable insight to people on how much they are actually eating vs how much they think they are eating.
